Article by Lorrie Leullig, appearing on Law.Com Legal Technology News.
The article discusses the need to create an "Information Governance" policy within a corporate environment, so as to create a worfklow that is prepared when litigation arises.
The article states the following: "The goals of IG are to: (1) routinely identify information that has legal, compliance, or business value; and (2) communicate this understanding to IT so it can dispose of information that has no such value. This "defensible disposal" of data makes it easier and less costly to respond quickly and accurately to discovery requests and has a number of other advantages, including reducing IT costs."
The article makes important points, and provides insight into best practices that should be followed in order to be litigation ready. Collaboration between IT and legal departments can certainly save costs, and reduce risks, when there is a proper level of cooperation.
