Legislation Lags Location-Based Data Tracking
http://ow.ly/7Z1hr
An article by Michelle Manafy posted on the internetevolution.com website.
This article discusses location tracking technology, and how it is causing legal and ethical challenges.
The article discusses the fact that legislation to protect privacy rights often lags behind technological developments, and this can certainly be seen in the context of location tracking.
The article states, "Carrier IQ, of course, is now famous for developing a smartphone app that logs, and may transmit, sensitive information, including users' locations, Websites they visit, and even the contents of searches and text messages."
The article goes on to further describe congressional inquiries into technology provided by companies such as Carrier IQ. The author further states, "Senator Franken also asked if Carrier IQ would allow users to stop this tracking.
As with many digital concerns to date (and likely many more to come), legislation lags the pace of technology. Yet Senator Franken touches on something that has recurred time and again: As much as users long for the improvements that digital innovations such as location-based personalization promise, they also want transparency and control."
